What Does HbA1c Measure & What Is a Normal Range?

HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin) is the gold standard test for diagnosing and monitoring diabetes. Learn what it measures, what normal and abnormal values mean, and how to book it at home.

What is HbA1c?

HbA1c, or glycated haemoglobin, is a blood test that reflects your average blood glucose (sugar) level over the past 2–3 months. Unlike a fasting glucose test — which gives a snapshot of your sugar level at one moment — HbA1c provides a longer-term picture of blood sugar control.

When glucose circulates in your blood, it binds to haemoglobin (the protein in red blood cells). The resulting compound is called glycated haemoglobin, or HbA1c. Since red blood cells live for approximately 90 days, the test provides a reliable 3-month average.

HbA1c Normal Range (Indian Reference Values)

| HbA1c Level | Classification |

|---|---|

| Below 5.7% | Normal (no diabetes) |

| 5.7% – 6.4% | Prediabetes |

| 6.5% and above | Diabetes (confirmed on repeat test) |

| Below 7% (in diagnosed diabetics) | Well-controlled diabetes |

| 7% – 8% | Acceptable control |

| Above 8% | Poor control — risk of complications |

Note: Your doctor may set individual target ranges based on your age, other medical conditions, and risk for low blood sugar. Always interpret results with your physician.

Why Is HbA1c Better Than a Single Glucose Test?

A random or fasting glucose test can fluctuate based on what you ate, stress, illness, or time of day. HbA1c is not affected by short-term factors, making it far more reliable for diagnosing type 2 diabetes and assessing long-term control.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the American Diabetes Association use HbA1c as the primary diagnostic criterion for type 2 diabetes.

Who Should Get the HbA1c Test?

You should consider getting an HbA1c test if:

  • You have a family history of diabetes

  • You are overweight or have a high BMI
  • You experience frequent thirst, urination, or fatigue
  • Your fasting glucose was borderline (100–125 mg/dL)
  • You are above 35 years old (annual screening recommended)
  • You are pregnant or planning to conceive
  • You have PCOS, hypertension, or elevated cholesterol

Does HbA1c Require Fasting?

No. One of the most important advantages of HbA1c is that it does not require fasting. You can book a home collection at any time of day — morning, afternoon, or evening — without any dietary restrictions before the test.
